The MIND diet
New research has shown that a healthy diet high in beans, berries, wholegrains and green leafy vegetables can significantly impact on cogntive skills in later life. Scientists from the Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago found that elderly adults who followed the diet were 7.5 years 'younger' than their peers in terms of cogntive functions such as memory and recall.
The MIND diet stands for Mediterranean-Dash diet Intervention for Neurogenerative Delay and is a conglomeration of the well known Mediterranean diet rich in olive oils and vegetables, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH). It has fifteen main components, incuding red wine, and limits foods such as red meat, butter, margarine, cheese and fried foods. The only permitted fruit are berries.
Research is continuing but it being proposed that the diet may help prevent the onset of Dementia.
